OUR STORY

Promise Inclusion - Our Story

A local, self-funded charity, we began our journey as Wokingham Mencap in 1997 run by a group of parent carers.

Moving into our first office in Rose Street, Wokingham, in 2000 we had one part time paid member of staff.

Since those early days, we have continued to grow from strength to strength and have developed into the thriving charity we are today, overseen by a Board of Trustees. In 2009 we became a Company Limited by Guarantee and became Wokingham, Bracknell & Districts Mencap Ltd. with a new charity number and a new branch in Bracknell.

Now in 2019, we have re-branded Wokingham, Bracknell & Districts Mencap and and now we are proud to be known as Promise Inclusion. By merging the Wokingham and Bracknell offices, we are able to provide central resources whilst maintaining a base for services in both Wokingham and Bracknell.

Can you help support our mission and deliver on the promise that ALL people matter?

As an independent charity, affiliated to, but not financed by, the Royal Mencap Society, we are required to raise over £180,000 each year to both develop and maintain our services.

We have always been and continue to be advocates for rights and services for our members and we work with local authorities and health commissioners to make sure that our members’ voices are heard.

We are proud to work in partnership with other local voluntary organisations that support people with a learning disability and autism, and with Wokingham Borough and Bracknell Forest Borough councils.

We play a prominent role in local Learning Disability Partnership Boards and their associated sub-groups.

“ I don’t know what I would have done without somebody to talk these things through with. I’m really lucky to have your support ”
